Scale tribute to the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL - iconic gullwing styling

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL stands out as a landmark sports car from the 1950s, originally developed with racing technology and shown at the 1954 New York motor show. Its potent 3 litre engine and upward-opening gullwing doors made it famous, and only about 1,400 units were produced by 1957, securing its collector appeal.

Kit highlights from Tamiya's 1/24 release

This Tamiya kit faithfully reproduces key elements of the 300 SL. The model features operational gullwing doors and a removable bonnet exposing a detailed power unit. Included metal emblem transfers and refined tyre parts help recreate the road-going details, while the tubular space frame is represented to reflect the original chassis engineering.

Specifications

  • Scale: 1/24
  • Assembly Type: Kit
  • Decals: Included
  • Special Features: Opening engine bonnet and gullwing doors, metal emblem transfers, tubular space frame
  • Material: Plastic with metal-plated parts
Standard modelling tools suffice: cutters, files, hobby knife, sanding sticks and fine brushes. A small pair of tweezers helps with tiny metal-plated parts.
Apply thin clear coats between paint layers and finish with a final clear varnish to protect decals and painted details from handling.
The kit represents the tubular space frame in areas that are visible when certain panels are removed or opened, adding to the technical accuracy of the build.
