Most German Army divisions in WWII frequently had unique field armed forces police platoons. These devices had been tasked with directing traffic along tracks of advance and resupply, manning checkpoints, managing prisoners also deserters, and keeping law and order of captured regions. Soldiers in these field military police units were distinguished by insignia in the left sleeves of the uniforms in addition to a special gorget on their chest, which led regular soldiers to derisively phone them "chain dogs."
