Six Wheels, One Icon: Tyrrell P34 in RC Scale

The Tyrrell P34 remains famous as the only six-wheeled car to compete in Formula 1, an inventive solution by Derek Gardner that used four small front tyres to lower aerodynamic drag while preserving grip. The P34 debuted at the 1976 Spanish GP and famously produced a 1-2 finish in Sweden with drivers Jody Scheckter and Patrick Depailler.

Authentic F1 Detail on an F103 Chassis

Tamiya brings the P34 to RC fans in 1/10 scale on the F103 platform. The kit features a polycarbonate body with exposed engine bay styling cues and ships with rubber tyres for a true-to-era look. A Type 540 motor is included so you can get the model running alongside your chosen radio and battery setup.

1976 Japanese GP Livery and Features

This kit reproduces the P34 as seen at the 1976 Japanese Grand Prix, complete with the triangular net guard on the air funnel and the distinct rear wing tip panels used at Fuji Speedway. Despite rainy conditions that day, the car produced one of the season's standout drives when Depailler climbed to second.

Collector Appeal and Track Potential

The Tamiya Tyrrell P34 appeals to collectors and drivers who want a historically faithful kit with an uncommon mechanical layout. The six-wheel design alters handling characteristics, offering a fresh challenge for setup and driving technique.

Whether for display or track use, the Tamiya Tyrrell P34 adds a rare piece of F1 history to any RC collection.

Use polycarbonate-specific spray paints and thin coats for best results, and mask areas carefully to retain grille and engine bay detail.
The smaller front wheels change steering sensitivity and response; expect different turn-in characteristics and tune suspension and toe settings accordingly.
The F103 platform accepts many common upgrades, but verify part compatibility, especially for components that interface with the front steering assembly.
Standard NiMH packs are straightforward to use, while LiPo batteries offer better performance if you ensure correct connectors and a compatible ESC when upgrading.
