The Hawk T1A succeeded the Hawker Hunter in Tactical Weapons Units and had 89 frames altered to accept AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles and a centreline gun pod. It was integrated into the Mixed Fighter Force alongside Phantom and Tornado interceptor types, and the gun pod on display examples was reworked to hold oil for smoke output.
