Tyre truing aluminium drum with P120 grit

The HUDY 102580 Professional aluminium sanding drum is an RC-scale tool for trimming and shaping tyre treads. Its P120 abrasive bonded to the aluminium core offers a medium cut suitable for controlled profiling of rubber tyres.

The drum is made to be used in tyre truers or sanding holders and mounts onto compatible mandrels as part of a truing arrangement. Since attachment methods vary by tool, fit and secure the drum according to your truer or holder manual.

When tuning, treat this drum as a profiling implement: use it to level tread, remove moulding highs, and refine transitions to alter contact patch characteristics. The medium P120 grit gives predictable removal rates while preserving a useful surface finish for setup testing.

By evening tread and removing high spots, the HUDY 102580 helps produce a consistent contact patch, which can stabilise grip and make handling more predictable during setup runs.
Work in light, controlled passes and check the tyre profile frequently. Small, incremental cuts preserve tyre integrity and let you fine tune contact patch shape.
Use finer grits after initial profiling with P120 if you need a smoother surface. P120 is best for shaping; finishers remove remaining roughness without changing profile substantially.
Ensure the drum and tyre are mounted concentrically on the truer mandrel before cutting. Off-centre mounting risks uneven removal and unpredictable results.
Use light passes and allow breaks between heavier cuts. Excessive pressure or continuous heavy sanding generates heat that can deform tyre compounds.
P120 is a medium grit that works on many rubber compounds, but compound softness and construction affect how quickly material is removed. Test on a spare tyre to confirm results before profiling competition tyres.
