Accurate 1/12 Scale Renault RE-20 Turbo Model

The Tamiya 12033 Renault RE-20 Turbo reproduces the look and engineering of Renault's turbo F1 car in a detailed 1/12 scale. This kit recalls the RE-20 that performed strongly at the 1980 Brazilian, South African and Austrian Grands Prix and mirrors the V-6, 1.5-litre twin-turbo engine estimated at 520 horsepower. Photo-etched parts are supplied to improve the realism of the radiator, intercooler, oil cooler and brake discs.

Period Aerodynamics and Build Interaction

The RE-20's aerodynamic package included inverted rear wings and side skirts to exploit ground effect. Tamiya's kit recreates those features and adds movable side skirts, semi-pneumatic rubber tyres and steerable front wheels to keep the build engaging. The detachable cowling exposes the turbocharged six-cylinder for painting and display options.

  • Scale: 1/12
  • Engine: Turbocharged 6-cylinder
  • Features: Movable side skirts, steerable front wheels
  • Tires: Semi-pneumatic rubber
  • Includes: Photo-etched parts
This is better suited to modellers with some experience due to small parts and photo-etched components; beginners may still build it with patience and basic modelling tools.
Yes, the removable cowling and detailed sections allow access to the turbocharged six-cylinder area for painting and display.
If you prefer a static display, movable skirts and steering links can be secured during final assembly to lock them into a chosen position.
Work over a tray to catch small parts, use fine tweezers and fold or shape etches carefully using a dedicated bending tool or flat pliers to avoid kinks.
