• The 2-stroke, 3-cylinder Honda NS500 replaced the NR500 for the 1982 season. After a disappointing debut period, the NS500 shined in 1983 taking out fully the championship because of the young 21-year-old Freddie Spencer during the helm. Spencer's season long name battle with threetime globe champion Kenny Roberts produced probably one of the most exciting seasons in the history of GP racing. Entering the final round, Spencer lead Roberts by simply 5 points. In a difficult last competition, despite Roberts using the checkered flag, Spencer's second placing provided him enough points to secure the championship by 2 points, making him the youngest ever 500cc GP champion. The Honda-Spencer combination had an ideal balance of youth, normal ability plus the best engineering technology.
