The Lotus Type 79 from 1978, known as the "Black Beauty", is celebrated for pioneering ground effect aerodynamics. Driven by Mario Andretti and Ronnie Peterson, the car combined striking looks with dominant race performance, taking both drivers and constructors titles during the season.
Tamiya's 1/20 scale kit gives modellers the parts to build a detailed display model. The completed dimensions are 220mm in length and 108mm across, reflecting the car's low stance. Removable front and rear cowlings permit builders to present cockpit, engine and suspension details.
The kit accurately captures the underside shape of the side pontoons, a feature central to the Type 79s aerodynamics. Metal covers for the air funnels and rubber tyres are included to enhance authenticity. Builders can choose decals for car No.5 or No.6 and select different roll bars and air outlets to match the British or German Grand Prix versions.
