A modeller's look at the Tamiya Ki-61-Id 1/72

The Tamiya 1/72 Kawasaki Ki-61-Id Hien kit provides a focused study of a unique Japanese fighter from World War II. Entering service in 1943, the Hien is remembered for using a liquid-cooled Ha-40 engine, a trait that distinguished it from many contemporaries.

Why the Id variant is model-worthy

The box represents the Ki-61-Id, the common production model with approximately 1,360 machines built. Its extended nose carried 20mm cannon armament, which was significant when facing US B29 operations. Tamiya recreates the aircraft's natural metal look via a matte silver plating on parts.

Assembly highlights and accuracy

Scale builders will enjoy the accurate slender fuselage and elongated nose shape. The cockpit is arranged for easy subassembly prior to fuselage mating. Included details cover radiator and oil cooler parts, clear pieces for lights and gunsight, and optional fittings such as the Venturi tube to boost fidelity.

Specifications

  • Scale: 1/72
  • Length: 125mm
  • Wingspan: 167mm
  • Material: Plastic with matte silver color plating
  • Includes camouflage decals
The kit offers faithful external shapes and finishing options that make it a strong candidate for shelf display once painted and weathered to taste.
Canopy fit is generally good; trimming and careful sanding of mating edges usually ensures a neat join before final sealing and glazing.
The matte silver plating gives a convincing bare-metal look but should be treated with care during handling and painting to avoid scuffs; use gloves or soft tweezers where possible.
