The I-400 submarine was conceived as a long-range, aircraft-carrying vessel able to launch three Seiran fighters from a built-in hangar. With an overall length near 122 metres and a submerged displacement of 6,560 tons, it was the largest submarine class of its day. The design aimed to reach distant targets without refuelling.
Construction finished in December 1944, but the class never engaged in combat before the war ended. Its engineering concepts are often referenced in studies of later strategic submarine development.
Tamiya's 1/350 scale kit reproduces the I-400s hangar geometry and deck detail faithfully. Clear parts provide a view of the Seiran aircraft when arranged inside the hangar, creating a striking display option.
Included are photo-etched fittings for delicate items such as handrails and the crane, plus four metal torpedoes and transparent canopies for the Seiran aircraft pieces. The kit also contains forty-eight 1/350 figures to add life to the scene.
