The Ohsumi class multipurpose transports serve a range of support roles in the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force. The LST-4002 Shimokita is valued for its carrying capability and seaworthiness. Tamiya's 1/700 kit recreates the ship with careful attention to deck layout and operational details for display builders.
Launched on November 29, 2000, Shimokita is noted for having one of the longest hulls in JMSDF service. The flared armored deck improves vehicle handling and gives the ship a sturdy profile. This Tamiya model reproduces the elevator, the well-dock and the centre gate, and includes two precise LCAC hovercraft models for realistic staging.
The model uses clear components for the flight and vehicle decks so internal fittings remain visible after assembly. The box contains CH-47 and SH-60J helicopter miniatures, tanks, small military vehicles, large trucks, anti-aircraft units, self-propelled guns and over 50 miniature vehicles. A small missile launcher is supplied to add accurate deck equipment.
