1/700 Shimakaze from Tamiya 31460 with detailed parts

Noted for her speed in World War II, Shimakaze could reach approximately 40.9 knots. Her propulsion consisted of powerful steam turbines rated at 75,000 horsepower and she carried distinctive quintuple torpedo launchers. Intended as the prototype for a 16 vessel class, Shimakaze remained unique and was lost in the Battle of Ormoc Bay in November 1944.

Designed for fidelity and clean assembly

The Tamiya 1/700 kit gives enthusiasts a chance to replicate the destroyer with careful detail. Released in 1972 and updated in 2017, the kit incorporates improved tooling and reference accuracy to help achieve a convincing finish.

Key Features of the Model Kit

  • Hull produced in two pieces to match the slim hull lines.
  • Detailed deck fittings include anchor chain and deck textures.
  • Slide-mold twin gun turrets provide dimensional accuracy and use poly caps for rotating guns and torpedo mountings.
  • Includes decals to reproduce linoleum deck areas and identification marks.
  • Engineered to be built at the waterline for maritime dioramas and display cases.

Yes, once assembled and painted the model presents well in a glass case. Protect rigging and thin parts during handling and consider mounting on a secure base.
Pre-painting some small components can simplify the process and ensure crisp colours, especially for areas that become hard to reach after final assembly.
Use fine thread or stretched sprue for rigging and a sharp hobby knife to remove flash. Patience and tweezers are key when fitting small railings and aerials.
Search naval archives, museum collections, and specialist books on Japanese destroyers. Period photos help with paint shades and deck arrangements.
