The Soviet Union's very first attack weapon become produced was a device armed with a 122 mm howitzer called the SU-122. It was created by engineer E.W. Wilniszczikov utilizing the help of F.F. Pietrov, the king of Russian weapon designers, who had created the 122 mm weapon. This was an excellent howitzer with a selection of 11,800 m, muzzle velocity of 515 m/sec and rate of fire of 5 or 6 rounds/min. The SU-122 self propelled gun was comparable in shape towards German StuG III armed using the brief barreled 75 mm gun. Featuring its cumbersome recoil device and mantlet, the very first production SU-122 was quite ugly. The last manufacturing model, however, featured refined semi spherical recoil mechanism and gun shield. The SU-122 attack weapon first saw action in Battle of Kursk in the summer time of 1943. SU-122s took part inside recapture of Orel on north of Kursk as well as in the following pursuit.
