The P40 is a notable entry in Italy's World War II armour development, produced as the country's heavy tank option. Its chassis used bogey-style rollers and leaf spring suspension, reflecting a pragmatic approach to design. The name P40 comes from Pesante, meaning heavy, and the year 1940 when it was adopted. Several design cues were carried over from the Carro Armato M13/40.
Armed with a 75mm gun and an 8mm Breda machine gun, the P40 ran on a 330hp V12 diesel powerplant. Sloped armour was incorporated after facing Soviet T-34s in combat. Although a large order near 1,200 was placed, production halted early and only a portion were completed before the 1943 armistice. Remaining units were used in northern operations and in Yugoslavia toward the war's end.
The Italeri 1/35 scale kit captures the P40s riveted hull lines, sloped armour and realistic leaf spring suspension. It includes assembly type tracks plus photo-etched parts for components like exhaust shields and fender supports, improving the fine detail. The decal sheet offers three marking choices, including a Fiat Ansaldo prototype and examples used by German forces.
