The M1A1 Abrams became a central platform in modern armoured forces after entering service in the early 1980s. Bearing General Creighton Abrams name, it showed a move toward composite armour and heavier main armament.
This Tamiya release highlights how the M1A1 developed from the initial M1. Its angular turret and Chobham armour improved survivability against anti-tank threats. Upgrading to a 120mm smoothbore gun, adding stronger frontal protection, larger stowage and reinforced suspension helped define its role during the Persian Gulf Conflict.
Equipped with a 1500 hp turbine engine, the Abrams combined solid acceleration with good cross-country mobility and relatively low acoustic output. The model kit mirrors these aspects, giving builders a detailed, period-accurate subject to assemble and display.
