The German Army Weapons Branch ordered the Henschel company to vie with Porsche in producing a prototype. The initial prototypes underwent trials on April 1942. The consequence of these and subsequent trial showed the superiority of the Henschel vehicle on Porsche's, and thus production requests were put for it. The Henschel's prototype had thick armor of 100mm in front and 80mm on both sides, as well as the main gun ended up being the then strongest, the 8.8cm KwK 36 L/56. The powerplant was Maybach's HL 210 P45, yielding 650 horsepower. Mass manufacturing began already in August 1942 with little alteration from the model. Beginning from November 1942, atmosphere pre-cleaners were added regarding backside hull dish. The mantlet had been partly strengthened and "S" mine dischargers had been fitted on five mounting points across the hull roof starting from December. More Over, a loader's periscope had been fitted from January 1943. The Tiger We created from November 1942 to July 1943 featured these adjustments, are referred to as the early production.
