JS-2 Model 1944: design and battlefield purpose

The JS-2, bearing Joseph Stalin's initials, entered frontline service in 1944 and offered Soviet forces a heavy-hitting tank. Designed to meet the threat of German 88mm guns and to take on heavy tanks like the Tiger and Panther, it mounted the A-19 122mm main gun and featured armour up to around 120mm in key sections.
