1/35 Tamiya Wespe kit, Italian front scheme

The Tamiya 1/35 German Self-Propelled Howitzer Wespe offers a compact artillery model with crisp detail and an authentic profile. The original vehicle used the Pz.Kpfw.II chassis and mounted the Type 18/2 10.5cm L/28 howitzer in a fixed fighting compartment. Light armour did not prevent it from providing essential fire support during operations.

Why this release matters

This release from Tamiya adds refreshed components and new marking choices to portray Wespe examples from the Italian front. With only 676 vehicles produced, model makers can represent a less common piece of WW2 artillery history.

Construction notes and presentation ideas

The kit rewards careful assembly, especially around the howitzer and superstructure joins. Completed builds suit display on a base or within small dioramas that highlight Mediterranean theatre details and weathering.

Specifications

  • Scale: 1/35
  • Material: PS plastic
  • Assembly: Requires glue
  • Paint: Not included
  • Part Count: Detailed components for realistic assembly
The kit is well detailed out of the box, but adding washes, pigments and subtle chipping will lift the finished model to a more convincing battlefield appearance.
Tamiya's instruction sheet is straightforward with exploded diagrams; beginners with basic skills should be able to follow steps, though patience is needed for small parts.
Standard plastic cement or liquid solvent adhesives provide the best bonds for PS parts. Use sparingly on fine details to avoid melting small features.
Aftermarket brass barrels and resin upgrades are available for enhanced realism, but fitting may require modification and care.
