The M18 Hellcat was conceived as a fast, agile tank destroyer to challenge enemy armour. Noted for its open-top turret and a 76mm cannon, it used a compact layout with torsion bar suspension, a significant advance for US tracked vehicles. A radial 9-cylinder powerplant enabled top speeds up to 80km/h, earning it a reputation as the fastest tracked vehicle in wartime service.
Manufacture started in July 1943 and frontline deployment began on the Italian Front in 1944. The Hellcat's mobility made it ideal for hit-and-run engagements and it was deployed across western Europe and in Pacific theatre operations, where speed often determined survivability.
The Tamiya 1/35 kit faithfully recreates the Hellcat's profile and surface features. The model measures 192mm long and 80mm wide when complete. Included parts cover the main gun breech, shell storage, radio transceiver and turret turning gears, with clear components for lights and a textured gun shield canvas finish.
The suspension components are modelled for accurate appearance while remaining straightforward to assemble. Single-pin track sections come as straight one-piece links. The kit includes a standing crew figure and two marking schemes to depict vehicles from the Italian Front for display variety.
