In 1986, Mercedes-Benz released a sports form of the 190 series car with a 16-valve motor. This car later on developed into the 190 E 2.3-16, 190 E 2.5-16, 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution, last but not least the 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II. This last variant had been also found in the German Touring automobile Championship motor sport show and became an extremely popular and competitive machine.
