The McDonnell Douglas F-15C Eagle established itself as a premier air superiority fighter after first flight in July 1972. Twin Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-100 turbofan engines give it high speed performance, with reported capability above Mach 2.5. It carries an internal 20mm M-61A-1 cannon and provision for four AIM-9L Sidewinder and four AIM-7F Sparrow missiles.

Transitioning from the F-15A, the F-15C introduced improvements in 1979 including about 15 percent more internal fuel and conformal fuel tanks that match the airframe profile. Landing gear enhancements were added to manage the additional weight, extending the jet's operational flexibility.
