The North American F-51D Mustang evolved from early 1940 designs and quickly became a standout fighter. The U.S. designation P-51 was paired with the British nickname "Mustang." The P-51D, with its signature bubble canopy, is widely recognised as the maturity point of the line, with production numbers topping 9,603.
Its armament of six .50 caliber machine guns, split across both wings, offered heavy forward firepower. The addition of wing pylons allowed for drop tanks or 1,000-pound ordnance, expanding mission roles. The Mustang saw continued deployment after WWII, including during the Korean War, where its nimble flight characteristics were prized even as the liquid-cooled engine required careful maintenance.
