The Douglas F4D-1 Skyray is remembered as the U.S. Navy's unique delta-wing interceptor. Its design work began after World War II with studies from the late 1940s, starting formal design in 1947 and achieving first prototype flight in January 1951, notable for its 50-degree sweptback wing planform and strong performance.
Production aircraft first flew in June 1954 and the type reached operational units by April 1956. Though it never saw combat action, it was active during regional tensions in the late 1950s. The Tamiya 61055 kit in 1/48 scale reproduces the Skyray's silhouette and detailing for model display.
