Known by names like Dauntless II, AD, A-1 Able Dog and Spad, the Douglas A-1J Skyraider served for nearly thirty years. Its design began in June 1944, but the type did not see service in World War II and instead first fought in Korea in 1950. Over 3,200 machines were produced across several marks, with the AD-6 being particularly common.
The AD-7, later called the A-1J, came with reinforced wing spars and heavy-duty landing gear. Driven by the Wright R-3350-26WB radial engine, its top speed reached about 285 knots. During Vietnam the A-1J flew many support and strike missions with bombs, cannons and rockets, notably with the 14th and 56th Special Operations Wings.
The Tamiya 1/48 Douglas Skyraider A-1J kit presents parts shaped to reflect the original airframe and panel lines. The set is aimed at modellers who enjoy careful assembly and paintwork; glue and paints are required. With attentive finishing you can achieve a convincing museum style display piece.
