Lightweight Balsa Strips for Scratchbuilding

Tamiya 70187 balsa strips supply lightweight timber for builders who need accurate, workable stock. Measuring 1.7x75x305mm, these strips are handy for constructing internal frames, scale details and small structural parts.

Easy to Cut and Shape

Balsa is valued for its softness and low mass, with most commercial balsa coming from Ecuador. Its grain is forgiving so you can shape and trim parts quickly using a craft knife and sanding block, suitable for both beginners and advanced hobbyists.

Assembly and Finishing Advice

  • Drawing and Cutting: Trace patterns lightly and use a sharp blade, cutting in several passes to avoid splintering. A straight edge helps keep long cuts true.
  • Smoothing and Finishing: Tamiya Finishing Abrasives (P180-P320) are recommended to smooth joins and edges prior to painting.
  • Gluing and Reinforcement: Use PVA or craft adhesives for reliable joins; add small triangular supports where loads concentrate to improve longevity.
  • Painting Options: Compatible with Tamiya acrylics, enamels and spray paints as well as standard hobby paints, providing a wide range of finishing choices.
They can be used for small, decorative hulls but balsa needs sealing for water resistance. Use epoxy or a waterproof lacquer for any model exposed to moisture.
Tamiya 70187 is produced to consistent dimensions but slight natural variation can occur; pick pieces for critical fits and sand where needed for precise joins.
Add fillets of glue or thin plywood gussets at joints to spread loads. Allow full cure before sanding or applying paint for best strength.
