The Tamiya 70217 Flywheel Car Assembly Kit offers a straightforward way to study mechanics through building and testing. The friction-powered flywheel gives a clear example of kinetic energy in a compact model car format.
The drive unit is transparent so the metal flywheel and gearing are visible during operation. The flywheel is capable of driving the car for around 20 metres, which typically equals about 35 seconds of movement on a hard surface.
Included are zigzag and figure of eight cams plus a spare cam for customisation. Swapping cams changes the front wheel motion and lets you experiment with different running patterns.
Assembly requires no cement, using snap-fit parts and screws that make the kit accessible to newcomers. You can lock the front wheel to test straight-line performance and measure distance or time.
