The Tamiya 70224 Swimming Dolphin is part of Tamiya's STEM collection and provides a practical build that illustrates mechanical motion. The assembled dolphin swims using a compact underwater gearbox driven by a small motor, offering a tactile learning experience.
This compact model measures 182mm in length, 100mm across and 60mm tall. It is powered by a submarine mini motor that takes one AAA battery (not supplied) and uses a crank mechanism to pulse the tail fin up and down, producing forward motion while the head bobs.
The dolphin uses springy polypropylene (PP) for the body and fins, chosen for its flexibility and durability to simulate natural swimming. The kit also includes a float attached with a suction cup so the model stays buoyant in water.
Designed as an accessible introduction to mechanical assembly, this kit works well for guided younger builders. Adjusting the fin alignment allows you to influence the swim direction and observe cause and effect in a clear way.
