The Tamiya 71112 Mechanical Racehorse is a hands-on STEM kit that pairs simple construction with visible mechanical action. It is well suited to hobbyists and makers who enjoy studying linkages and gearbox layouts.
With left and right legs moving in sync, the design improves running stability and raises speed to around 1.3 times that of the older mechanical rabbit model. Refined wheelbase proportions and leg mechanics transmit motor power through link rods, and two selectable modes change the running behaviour.
The build uses a mix of screws and snap-fit pieces for a clear, manageable assembly. Pre-marked cable ends make the electrical connections straightforward, which helps younger builders follow the wiring correctly.
Parts are moulded in transparent orange so the internal motion is visible during operation. The kit includes three sticker options to decorate the horse mask, racing number and jockey clothing, letting you personalise each finished model.
Best results come from running the model on level, smooth surfaces. Avoid slopes, bumpy ground or deep carpet which can upset the gait and slow performance.
