Tool for fine scale work

The Tamiya 74148 Fine Engraving Needle is for enthusiasts who need neat, narrow engraved lines on trim pieces and tiny components. The 20 degree point is suited to tight detail and crisp scribing on model surfaces.

Quality build and holder options

Manufactured in cemented carbide to resist wear, the needle keeps a fine edge for longer sessions. With a 25mm overall length and a 2mm shaft it is compatible with Tamiya holders such as Item 74139 and commonly used vises like Fine Pin Vise D (Item 74050) and D-R (Item 74112).

Best practice for controlled engraving

Pull the needle gently along the intended line using multiple light passes rather than one deep cut. This approach maintains control and produces uniform grooves on both straight and curved work.

Storage and spares

A compact carrying case holds up to ten needles and separately sold engraving blades, making it easy to keep spare tips and blades organised in the workshop.

It is designed for hand use in pin vises and dedicated holders. Using at rotary tool speeds is not recommended as the delicate tip can fracture.
Apply light pressure and avoid sideways loads. Carbide is hard but brittle, so steady, straight strokes extend tip life.
Use a fine pencil or scribing guide to lay out lines, then follow the guide with short, repeated pulls of the needle for an accurate groove.
