The Hawk Mk.66 is a variant of the famed Hawk series introduced in 1974 as a trainer and light combat aircraft. Powered by the Adour 151 turbofan, the type has a maximum takeoff weight of 2,360kg and an 11 metre fuselage able to carry up to 3 tonnes of ordnance such as AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles and a 30mm gun pod.
The Swiss Air Force selected the Hawk Mk.66 for advanced pilot training, taking delivery of 20 aircraft between 1990 and 2002. The model gained a reputation for reliable handling and effective multi-role capability.
Tamiya's 1/48 scale kit recreates the Hawk Mk.66's compact profile, finishing at 242mm in length and 197mm in height. Photo-etched parts enhance cockpit and mirror detail, and the kit includes a gun pod, drop tank and Sidewinder missiles for authentic loadouts. Options allow the canopy to be modelled open or closed and the airbrake positioned as required.
