The English Electric Lightning is famed for its climb performance and compact fuselage, a hallmark of RAF Cold War interceptors. Trumpeter's 1:72 scale 01634 kit captures the aircrafts profile and basic detail for scale builders interested in postwar jets.
Originally a point-defence interceptor, the Lightning later performed strike and reconnaissance tasks. The F.1 entered service after its first production flight in October 1959 and carried radar plus Firestreak missiles. Later F.1A and F.2 variants added aerial refuelling, upgraded avionics and a steerable nosewheel for improved ground handling.
The kit comprises 72 plastic parts, including 4 clear parts for canopy and missile elements, all moulded in light grey on five sprues. Finished length is 233.13mm with a wingspan of 148.06mm. Decals recreate the Lightning F.1A XM 181 in RAF markings from 1971 and suit modelers wanting a classic RAF scheme.
