USS England entered service in December 1943 as a turbo-electric (TE) destroyer escort and carried the name of Ensign John Charles England. In 1944 she performed escort and hunter-killer duties in the Pacific, and between 19 May and 31 May she and three sister DEs sank six Japanese submarines using Hedgehog launchers and depth charges. She later supported operations at Leyte, Iwo Jima and Okinawa and was decommissioned in October 1945.
