The SS John W. Brown earned recognition during World War II after completing 13 voyages to the Persian Gulf and Mediterranean. She saw combat support at Anzio and joined the southern France invasion in Operation Dragoon during August 1944, where US Navy Armed Guard personnel were involved in downing an enemy plane. After the war the vessel took part in reconstruction efforts and in repatriating American forces.
