Admiral Hipper wound up being commissioned in April 29th, 1939. She have been initial of five vessels of her course. She participated inside German invasion of Norway. On April 8th, 1940, she encountered the united kingdom destroyer HMS Glowworm north-west of Trondheim. Seven vessels from 19 was sunk, nevertheless the convoy spread and inclement weather aided their escape. In short supply of 203 mm ammo, Admiral Hipper returned to Brest on 14 February 1941.
