Will this work with aluminium steering blocks?

Yes. The adapter works with both aluminium and plastic steering blocks; use thread locker on metal threads and check the clearance between the arm and knuckle after installation.

Do I need shims or spacers when fitting?

Possibly. Depending on your steering knuckle and tie rod geometry you may need small shims to maintain correct camber and toe settings. Trial fit then adjust as needed.
