Yes, it uses the standard 5mm diameter so it will mate with other 5mm bullet-type plugs and sockets commonly used in the RC scene.

How should I protect the soldered joint?

Slide heatshrink over the cable before soldering and shrink it after the joint cools. You can also use a small dab of silicone or cable tie to relieve strain.
